Making a DVD that features only pacing shots probably sounds a bit weird, but it was lot of fun and there were a lot of technical challenges to overcome before I was happy with the results.
It took a while to figure out how to prevent the microphone picking up all the wind noise coming through the car's open window. There was also the stability of the tripod to figure out and a few bungie cords sorted that problem. I let the camera's on-board stability control sort out the rest. Once I was set up, it was just a matter of leveling up the camera on my driveway before departing.
Some of the shots were filmed with auto exposure but manually setting it produced better results. All I had to do was hit the record button and set off. I could view the train in the camera's screen and adjust the car's speed to keep it in the frame, but once I was happy, I then used a reference point on the car to maintain the train in the frame so I hardly ever took my eyes off the road.
Many times I got caught up in traffic and those shots didn't make it to the final cut, but most of the time these are vacant roads that hardly anyone drives on - except for SH1...
This video features Diesel, Steam and Electric locos. All good stuff. Enjoy.
