Here in the United States, many worry that social studies education has been on the decline. In other words, too many American kids are not learning enough social studies in K-12 public schools across the country. Is this really true? If it is, what are solutions to this problem?
Mr. Beat and Mark Shubert from Tarpeia discuss.

The average person in the street doesn't care about history until they need to cherry pick a piece of information that they don't even understand the half of.
I’m an English/Social studies teacher. Here in VA, there was an attempt to remove all “controversial” figures from our history textbooks and curriculum. These figures included Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. They removed the Black Panthers years ago among others.
This last year I was not allowed to teach the Holocaust, and our only approved text on the subject was a brief story about Jewish refugees in mosques at the start of it all. I couldn’t tell my students what the Jewish refugees were escaping.
This is a real issue that’s too complex for a YouTube comment. I highly recommend looking into local politics for making change!!
I was a product of no child left behind. It was a disaster. I graduated in 2006. I loved history and social studies and still do. I went to get my classes for college and I told the advisor I wanted to get a history degree. They said no don't do that go into stem history is dime a dozen. I dropped out 5 years later because I was so discouraged and kept on changing my major. I later went to truck driving school to get my CDL and never looked back. MR.BEAT. keep up the great work and content. Thank you sir.
Everyone should value history. It’s the study of organized/unorganized human nature.
This is tragic….if children don’t learn history it’s bound to repeat and that will bring disastrous outcomes for us all for generations to come…..we gotta keep teaching history
Always made me wince whenever I heard “what’s the point of history?” in school, it was always insincere and they never wanted to listen to the answer as to why it’s important they’d just decided internally already that “history is useless and just memorizing dates”
Im a 9th grader, and I love history it's my favorite subject in school. It's sad that social studies education is declining because it's a very interesting topic and there's so much to learn about it!
I've been screaming this for years. The lack of education in social studies and history is one of the worst moves the education system ever made. Love your content Beat✌️
I remember social studies being my favorite subject from middle school all the way to high school 😢
I earned an M.A. in history. I'm disgusted by the censorship and propaganda from the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025, and PraugerU. I voted for Kamala Harris in Illinois...
Im a substitute teacher and farmer who feels that we are seeing the dangers of defunding education, especially in Civics and History education. Being a teenager in the early to mid 1990s, TV shows would say "what's the big deal about learning history when it's all in the past." Now since people are not learning anything about history, we are starting to repeat mistakes that occurred in past history.
It also made me upset to think two of the biggest things Googled after the 2024 election was "What's a tariff?" and "Can I change my vote?"
The lack of critical thinking and the lack of Civics and history education is now putting the United States into a huge mess.
I was one of the few farmers who didn't vote for Trump or the Republican party. Our families voting for Democrats goes back before the 1920s. We knew most Republicans can't be trusted with the economy.
Social studies is a very important class I wish people would care about it more it's really interesting
The current state of this country is directly tied to the declining emphasis on social studies in our schools. The dumbing down of what it takes to be a good and enlightened citizen is shocking. I truly believe this has all been designed to produce compliance. If we don't understand how our government works, and we don't know what our rights and protections are, then we cannot protect our freedom or our community or our country.
mr. beat you’re my favorite new youtuber/teacher i’ve discovered. to be honest, i was never really interested in social studies in school. i disliked school in general, but i always did better with things that had concrete foundations of knowledge without the need for much theorizing or philosophizing . i was a huge math and science girl. i studied political science in college, alongside spanish language, but i avoided classes that had anything to do with political theory. you and knowing better have really gotten me into understanding more of history and how it impacts us now. outside of a classroom, it’s been my favorite subject! please never stop and thank you for all you do 😊
I was lucky enough to go to a high school with plenty of social studies classes taught by passionate teachers! The discouraging part of my high school experience was that i only had four years to study there. And, as a "gifted student" and a devoted band leader, my time was very limited. I had so many courses that i couldn't take because of my limited schedule. One that really stung was not being able to take a "Native American Studies" course, which is a group of people whose history i find incredibly fascinating. I learned a lot in my years of high school and refuse to stop learning now! It is easier than ever to learn independently, and i am taking full advantage of that power (while remaining critical of the places i learn from, of course).
A thought on empathy in school as well: having contact with a wide variety of people at a young age might be helpful for kids if it's handled well, but based on my own experience it usually isn't. Most kids who are different get bullied for it, and most people who get bullied for being on the "wrong" side of any social line don't learn empathy as much as they learn that the people on the other side of that line are the bad ones and they should hate and fear them. That's a recipe for more prejudice rather than more understanding. It takes a more robust and capable administration than most public schools have to instill empathy where human nature taking its course will instill rage.
I do online school in Alaska (paid by state) and it's currently very good, I'm going to be grateful for it.
As someone who is a STEM major, my favorite high school teacher was my IB History teacher. History and social studies are so important for creating good citizens.
History is human receipts, off of past mistakes and learning from them will make a better future with hard self criticism n high standards.
I was a science and math guy for sure but growing up I realized how important history really is to avoid many of today's problems. It's ALWAYS a bad idea to try to cover up or rewrite history. Good or bad it is our story and the truth is far more important to learn from than a censored history where we are always the winners and never have losses to learn from...Thanks Mr. Beat for all that you and your community do!
