Due to their low weight, high energy density, and long lifespan, the popularity of lithium ion batteries continues to grow in applications ranging from consumer electronics to transportation. The safety, reliability, and longevity of these batteries is important, especially in high reliability complex industries such as transportation. While many aspects of the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries relate to the construction and installation of the cells, battery management systems play an important crucial role in the reliability and longevity of systems with utilizing lithium ion batteries both by protecting the pack from damaging events such as over-charge and under-charge and also by proactively detecting potentially dangerous conditions within the battery pack.

Chris Ewert, a BMS designer and co-founder of Ewert Energy Systems, will be presenting a webinar on the role that battery management systems play in protecting and preserving the lifespan of lithium ion battery packs. This webinar will discuss the primary functions of a BMS, what a BMS can and cannot do, the basic protection provided by a BMS, the role of cell balancing, and the ability of a BMS to detect cell failures.
