You've probably been to a hospital before. You've met doctors, nurses, and administrative staff. But how do Ontario's hospitals work? And who do those health-care workers...work for?
On this episode of Nerds on Health Care, TVO Today's Maryanne Oketch breaks down the complexities of Ontario's hospital system.
Do public hospitals work like public schools?
Not really. There's a unique structure in place that might surprise you. Independent corporations? Board of directors?
Does the government run them?
Also no. The reality is a bit more complicated than that, though the ministry of health and Ontario Health are involved.
Well, are they private businesses?
Not quite. Ontario's public hospitals are independent corporations, but that doesn't mean they do whatever they want.
And what about the health-care workers inside the hospital?
Are they hospital employees? Public servants? Independent contractors? None of the above? The answer might not be what you expect. There's a specific way these hospitals operate that sets them apart.
Join TVO Today's Maryanne Oketch as she explains who funds Ontario's hospitals, who runs them, and why that matters to you
