What Ricky Gervais understands, which many others don't, is that when things are said about you and you deny it, or make dumb excuses, or just start babbling and stuttering, you only lose credibility and end up looking like a fool. However, if you simply agree to a certain extent with what's being said, or even join in on making fun of yourself, you gain credibility and basically cut off the attack while simultaneously getting laughs.
