When my son was in middle school, he was riding his bike home and got pushed off his bicycle into a busy road. A kind stranger stopped and helped him, and then she called EMS despite the fact that my son wasn’t hurt. She did the right thing (one cannot be too careful), but I felt a bit of anger with both her and my son despite the fact that I knew better than to blame them. I was a single mom, and I immediately had a panic attack about the potential bill. Fortunately, it never came. EMS was about 1/2 mile away, and my son was within two blocks of home. The responders determined that he was okay, and they brought him home. I realize I was lucky not to get a bill, but I have been dismayed by my reaction to this incident over 12 years ago.
In 2014, an ambulance took me literally across a parking lot. It cost me almost $2k
I'm a volunteer firefighter in rural New Mexico, and I can confirm the system definitely needs a lot of work, most notably some serious funding improvements. My district only gets $5,000 from the state a year for everything medical we need.
Some individual pieces of equipment or loads of vital medicines are more than $5,000
I am a professional Chinese English translator and love @lastweektonight - I’ve actually done some translation work for them through Vice/HBO in the past. John Oliver repeatedly uses the term “translator“ in this piece. I noticed that all the professional journalists whose clips they used, however, used the correct terminology when discussing the interpreters who worked in Afghanistan. Translation and interpretation are two distinct fields and two distinct skill sets. Some people do work in both fields, but if that is the case, referring to them as translators AND interpreters demonstrates respect for both fields and their unique skill sets. Interpretation is spoken, and translation is written.
Jim Jordan's floundering is the gold standard for any actor wanting to learn how to answer a question while obviously lying.
Its absolutely disgusting that Americans have to pay thousands of dollars for EMS/ambulance service. Im Canadian, if i call an ambulance its $75 and if i can't afford to pay that I can simply provided my financial info and the fee is waived. No one goes bankrupt here getting treatment for medical issues. No one begs strangers not ro call an ambulance when their leg is being crushed by a train.
And no, people so not wait days in line for medical services, we dont have death panels and we don't wait months for necessary surgery. And no we so not pay 50% income tax (the hifhest tax bracket in Canada is 26% and thats for the top 1% income earners)
All lies the American government tells it citizens so they can keep insurance companies making billions in annual profits and citizens can keep choosing between bankruptcy or needed medical treatment. Your country sucks!
All i know when i had an ulcer in my stomach. My mom said the insurance bill was almost 30-50k. I was 17. Almost died. Yay me
i work for one of the parent companies of AMR on the air side, and let me tell you, even with the no surprises act and a large team who is vastly underpaid to argue with insurance providers for more money all day, the air ambulance bills are horrific. if i had to take one of their ground ambulances or die i think i’d rather force the company to pay out my life insurance.

Wow! Now I understand why I got a surprise bill on Christmas 2023 when I tested positive for COVID (I have MS, so my immune system does not handle things like COVID like a healthier person). The thing is, 911 was called on the evening of 12/25/23. Chicago EMS came, practically had to carry me to the ambulance, and got me to the closest hospital. Within about two hours, they brought me back home. The hospital supposedly said I was not sick enough to NEED an ambulance! It was Christmas night, I in no way could drive, and there was no one I could get to take me. The fun fact was that I was hardly home long when I had to call 911 AGAIN. Now it's 12/26/23, and the hospital suddenly agreed I had COVID + pneumonia. So I spent 4 days in the hospital. I come home, and in January 2024, I get an EMS bill for $3,204. It turned out that I was charged for the first ambulance when the hospital said I was not that ill -- thus making the ambulance ride "unnecessary." Really? But in less than 3 more hours, the ambulance is necessary. I guess I am just fortunate that I was not billed for both ambulances!! This country's health care services, no matter which you speak of, is fucked up!
I was in a car accident 3 years ago. My ambulance was 23k dollars. I was 2 blocks away from the hospital, and used no medical supplies. Zero medical care, just a ride 2 blocks away. That's it.
Being billed for an ambulance is just crazy, even if the EMT workers were well-paid or at least had decent health cover. I live in the UK and we never hesitate to call for an ambulance in an emergency because they're paid for by our taxes and free at point of delivery. I only learned today that some American fire departments charge fees for firefighting, or effectively insist on homeowners paying a subscription fee for fire protection and can refuse to put out a fire if the owner isn't a subscriber. How is this still a thing? Why aren't emergency services a public trust?
Helicopters, ambulances, and something called acute ambulance, where doctors drive with a trained racecar driver in high-speed cars that come in serious cases. You guessed right all are free, in Denmark. Statistics in arrival time is 8 minutes, we also have heart starters everywhere, which everyone can grab, and an app on those that have the app installed can be reached in seconds, and they will all run to help. we call them heart runners.
