大覚寺は、京都市右京区にある、嵯峨天皇が開基の真言宗大覚寺派大本山の寺院。平安時代のはじめ、嵯峨天皇の離宮として建立されて1200有余年が経つ皇室ゆかりの寺院です。嵯峨天皇の信任を得ていた空海が、離宮内に五大明王を安置する堂を建て、修法を行ったのが起源とされ、嵯峨天皇が崩御してから30数年後の貞観18年（876年）、皇女の正子内親王（淳和天皇皇后）が離宮を寺に改めたのが大覚寺の始まりです。また、嵯峨天皇を流祖と仰ぐ華道嵯峨御流の総司所（家元）でもあります。
嵯峨野の北東の自然豊かな静かな地に大覚寺はあり、境内にある大沢池は嵯峨天皇が築造したものといわれ、日本最古の庭池といわれます。
嵐山からも近く、仁和寺や金閣寺へ向かう道すがら是非訪れてみてください。

Daikakuji Temple, located in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City, is the head temple of the Daikakuji sect of Shingon Buddhism who founded by Emperor Saga. This temple has been associated with the Imperial Family for more than 1,200 years since it was built at the beginning of the Heian Period as the detached palace of Emperor Saga. The origin of the temple is believed to be that Kukai who had gained the confidence of Emperor Saga, built a hall to enshrine Godai Myoo in the detached palace and practiced Buddhism. In 876, more than 30 years after Emperor Saga's demise, the Imperial Princess Masako Naijin converted the detached palace into a temple, and this was the beginning of Daikakuji Temple. The temple is also the head temple (Iemoto) of the Saga Imperial School of flower arrangement whose founder is Emperor Saga.
Daikakuji Temple is located in a quiet and nature-rich area in the northeast of Sagano, and Osawa Pond in the precincts is said to have been built by Emperor Saga and is said to be the oldest garden pond in Japan. This place is close to Arashiyama and is a good place to visit on the way to Ninna-ji Temple and Kinkaku-ji Temple.
