“Remember You are Dust and to Dust You Shall Return”

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. We mark our foreheads with Ash which are obtained from the burning of the blessed palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday Mass to remind us that there is a part of ourselves that is of this earth and that one day will return to dust. While applying the ash a minister recites Genesis 3:19 "for dust you are and to dust you shall return". In some churches Ash Wednesday is observed by fasting and abstinence from meat.

God our Father, You formed us from the dust of the earth and brought us to new life in Christ through the waters of baptism. We ask you to change our hearts as we journey through these forty days of Lent. Help us to see Jesus in everyone we meet and to serve him in all persons, especially the poor, the sick and the lonely. By your grace, may our prayers and sacrifices this Lent help us grow closer to each another and to you, as one family in Jesus. We make this prayer to you in Jesus' name.. Amen
