In this lesson we’ll learn the 8th cognitive distortion, should statements.

This is when you try to motivate yourself by saying “I should do this” or “I must do that”.

Albert Ellis calls it “Must-urbation”

These statements make you feel pressured and resentful, and will actually leave you unmotivated.

You can also use this against other people, especially in the form of “He shouldn’t do this to me.”

Do you see why that’s a cognitive distortion?

You turn wishes into obligations or entitlements. You give yourself undue burden

There are two ways to overcome should statements. You can replace “I should” with “it is advisable that I do so”.

This softens your language and makes you feel less pressured.

Another way to crush should statements is to say, “why should I?”.

This is good to use when you are giving yourself pressuring yourself for small issues.

Watch the video to see some examples of should statements.
