Bonsai can be seen as going through fad cycles. That is a video goes viral, a truly amazing bonsai is exhibited or other triggers occur. When this happens it is mostly harmless. A few beginner trees are sold and most die but some lead to a life long interest.

Rarer is the fad that actually fails from the beginning. This is just such an example. The floating bonsai display.

We won’t discuss the mechanical problems of such a design, nor the minimal benefit or functionality. No it is the very basic premise that is a problem.

A floating bonsai is clearly going to have problems. Very basic and obvious problems that should be overcome before a product ever goes to market. This has not, is not and does not look like it will be resolved.

The foremost issue is getting the water levels right. Too much water and you will have a wet desk or similar. Too little and the bonsai will die.

This is a problem. The fact it floats leads to very fast drying of the bonsai. Water is more important for bonsai than in many other potted’ plants.

The next issue is quite literally a matter of balance. While Thanos thinks all things should be perfectly balanced this is not true of bonsai. This a certain degree of inevitable lopsided weight with bonsai. When this weight tries to float it will naturally fall over to one side.

While bonsai are awesome that does not protect them from the effect of suddenly decelerating after the effects of gravity. In less complex term they are fragile and break easily when dropping from even small heights. A problem that is very likely if not absolutely going to happen with this design.

Finally there is the basic issue of most bonsai not being suitable as indoor plants. That means this device that requires you keep the bonsai indoors is only good for a small subset of bonsai specimens.

This information is not something widely stated or circulated in the advertising. In fact based on images you might think the opposite. Or at least you will for a time and then the bonsai will begin to aila dn eventually die with little to no obvious reason.

Trying to keep a cheap and somewhat delicate machine like this outside is an even worse idea. That means your floating device will not be useful for large stretches of time.
