The short-lived Natalia Republic was annexed by the British in 1843 and thereafter became the Colony of Natal. This, in turn, spurred the Boers (yet again) trek northward. Here, they later established the Transvaal (South African) Republic in 1852 and the Orange Free State in 1854.

The British did, for a time, recognize the independence of the Boer republics, but later annexed Transvaal in the 1870s. This was followed by a war with the Zulu Kingdom. Having suffered a series of defeats - including that at Isandlwana - the British, nonetheless, ultimately persevered in the Anglo-Zulu War, partitioning and later absorbing the African kingdom.

However, the First Boer war soon followed and the Transvaal was able to regain self-rule under British sovereignty.

London continued to expand its influence over South Africa though and, following the Jameson Rain, a botched attempt to trigger an uprising by the primarily British expatriate workers (known as Uitlanders) in the Transvaal, the Second Boer War occurred in 1899.

This conflict led to the downfall of the indecent Boer republics and saw the use of scorched-earth tactics, concentration camps, etc. Having thoroughly crushed the Boers, London unified its various holdings in Southern Africa, establishing the Union of South Africa on May 31st, 1910.
