Army divers or 12Ds are the nations underwater engineer specialists and make up less than .0001% of the Soldiers currently serving.

With only about 150 divers in the Army, this is often considered one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the US Army. Established during World War II, the first Army divers were trained to fill a need of repairing damaged harbors and to conduct salvage operations. Only a handful of Soldiers in the Army were up to the task and the same still holds true today.

To put into context how small this community is there are about 250 Special Forces Green Berets compared to the 150 Army divers. Which means statistically you’re more likely to run into Green Beret than you are to run into an Army diver.
