Swiss tightrope expert Freddy Nock secured the first place after completing a 870-meter-long steel wire performance during the first-day tightrope walking competition in central China's Hunan Province on Friday.

Seven contestants competed in the walking, which was held at the Jiuxian Lake in Youxian County, Zhuzhou City.

Nock, 50, crossed the lake by walking on the rope as high as 30 meters above lake water in seven minutes and 39 seconds, with the help of a balancing pole and no safety nets.

Chinese acrobat Sattar Hojaabdulla, from Xinjiang, won the second place in eight minutes and 22 seconds. Samat Hasan, another high-wire walker from Xinjiang, finished third in 8 minutes and 30 seconds after two falls during his walk.

Another Chinese walker, Yakup Mamateli, accidentally fell into the river in the middle of his walk, and a 55-year-old Russian walker, Valeri, dropped out of the contest seconds after stepping onto the rope.

Two other female walkers, Ayxigul Mamatemin from China's Xinjiang and Yekaterina from Russia, finished their walks in 22 minutes and 13 seconds, and 26 minutes and 27 seconds, respectively.

Nock and Hojaabdulla will enter another contest on Sunday when they will compete by walking backwards while blindfolded on the rope.
