The Lotus Elise GT1 was developed for motorsport racing, building on Lotus's previous experience with the Esprit GT1 in the BPR Global GT series. It is a prototype street-legal road car that also served as a race car, competing in FIA GT championships. The Elise GT1 is best known for its participation in the GT1 class during the late 1990s at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Throughout its racing career, the Elise GT1 faced various rivals, including the McLaren F1 GTR, Venturi 600LM, Ferrari F40 GTE, Porsche 911 GT1, and the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, all of which were prominent in Le Mans history.
However, due to numerous challenges and losses for the company, Lotus decided to take a different approach. They resolved to create a single road version of their new race car, citing a lack of resources.
In addition to appearing in Need for Speed II, the Lotus Elise GT1 has also featured in various other racing game titles, such as Gran Turismo 2, Project Gotham Racing 3, and several Forza games.
