Banu Mushtaq’s 'Heart Lamp' Becomes First Short Story Collection to Win International Booker Prize

At the International Booker Prize ceremony held at London’s Tate Modern on May 20, 2025, Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq made history as the first short story collection to win the prestigious award for translated fiction. Translated from Kannada by Deepa Bhasthi, who also made history as the first Indian translator to win, the £50,000 prize is shared equally between author and translator. The acclaimed collection explores women’s lives and social issues in southern India, earning high praise from the judges for its powerful storytelling and radical translation. Mushtaq is the second Indian author to win the International Booker, following Gitanjali Shri in 2022.
