I've been playing this simple yet very satisfying habanera by Alba as a vehicle for practicing my no-nails rest strokes. And it may sound counter-intuitive, but I've been working hard at playing them softly. I think the rest-stroke is such an important part of the Tárrega school and one should be able to play it both loudly and quietly. It gives a nice thick sound with a bit of pleasant percussion behind it.

This was a single take with no edits so it may be a bit rough in comparison with others. Another note: the G and B strings are still Pirastro gut trebles but I've since had to replace the E string with a different brand of gut. It isn't as smooth as the Pirastros and I think it sounds quite scratchy in comparison to the others. You can really tell on the rest strokes. Here's a little recording of what the high E Pirastro sounded like (wonderful):    • Aguado Lesson 17...Again - Two Vintag...

This habanera was first published in 1896 and is available here (along with many other of Alba's works): www.bibliotecanacionaldigital.gob.cl/bnd/624/w3-pr…

Hi music is very interesting in my opinion. Much of it is quite simple but a lot of it sounds of a typical Spanish character. Besides composing for the guitar (both classical and flamenco) he also composed for the piano, harp, bandurría etc. He wrote a lot of habaneras! This is one of many, I've already been practicing another called, "Melancolía".

The pitch was A=425Hz on this one. Played without nails on a Sanchis guitar from the 1940's.
