Dr Omar Ishrak explores the history of Medtronic as the world’s largest medical device company, its approach to medtech technology, and the importance of continuous innovation, invention and disruption.
For the 16th annual FORUM lecture, the Academy of Medical Sciences was delighted to welcome Dr Omar Ishrak, Medtronic Chairman and CEO, to deliver a keynote speech on 'Transforming healthcare through engineering and technology'.
Dr Ishrak explained how the history of medical technologies, or medtech, showcases engineers and clinicians working together to deliver truly innovative solutions. Focusing on three key areas - continuous innovation, invention and disruption - he explains his views on the importance of patient-centric care and the importance of companies and innovators being rewarded for positive patient outcomes rather than just service delivery.
Dr Ishrak goes on to explore the compelling case for this ‘value-based healthcare’ model, before concluding with his views on the importance of working across disciplines to realize the full potential of combining digital technology and traditional medicine to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and standardize care.
