Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was assassinated on the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a play called Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
The Assassin: He was shot by John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and Confederate sympathizer who opposed Lincoln's policies, especially his stance on abolishing slavery.
The Attack: Booth entered the presidential box at the theater and shot Lincoln in the back of the head with a single-shot derringer pistol. After shooting Lincoln, Booth leaped onto the stage and escaped, shouting, "Sic semper tyrannis" (Latin for "Thus always to tyrants").
Aftermath: Lincoln was immediately taken to a boarding house across the street from the theater, where he remained in a coma for several hours. He died the next morning, on April 15, 1865, at 7:22 a.m.
Booth’s Fate: Booth fled but was tracked down 12 days later and killed during a standoff with Union soldiers in Virginia.
Lincoln's assassination was a major national tragedy, occurring just days after the end of the Civil War.
