Kitabatake Shrine was built in the Sengoku period towards the end of the Muromachi period, on the base of the Kitabatake clan, the feudal lord and governor of Ise.
The Kitabatake clan residence garden, which is located within the shrine grounds and covers a total area of about 2,600m2, is one of the three great gardens of Japanese military commanders and is a representative garden of Mie prefecture.
It is said to have been created by Hosokawa Takakuni, the kanrei (regent) of the Muromachi shogunate.
