Platelets adhere to tissue around a wound, helping to form a clot that prevents more blood from escaping. A layer of endothelial cells surrounds the inner walls of blood vessels. When a vessel is broken, collagen beneath the layer of endothelial cells is exposed, and this attracts the platelets.
