Architecture as teacher | The 'Iolani School design and play-based learning

How would a five year old design a school? The designers of the ‘Iolani School decided to ask their K1 kids this question … and the resounding answer was simple: “we want to play!”

Thus began the mission to design a learning environment that would be just as much of a ‘teacher’ in the ‘Iolani School’s K1 Community, as the teachers themselves.

The architecture is designed as a neighborhood of homes arranged around a shared, organic play space.

Wobbly corridors that feed curiosity, large farmhouse tables for shared activities, running water, fallen logs to climb over, natural timber and large expansive news of nature and the outdoors.

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the thoughtful elements incorporated into the architecture of this incredible learning environment.
