In this video we take a closer at how multilateration (MLAT) works. Explore how we keep track of aircraft so precisely, and find out how this is still possible when an aircraft is older and perhaps doesn't have ADS-B capabilities.
Multilateration is a fundamental flight tracking technique that determines an aircraft's position by measuring the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of signals sent from the aircraft to multiple ground stations. Unlike primary radar, which relies on reflecting radio waves, MLAT uses transponder signals from the aircraft. These signals are received by several ground stations, and by calculating the TDOA, the aircraft's location can be accurately triangulated. MLAT is effective in areas without radar coverage, enhancing air traffic surveillance and safety.
