Devotional Topic: "JUROR NUMBER 8"
Verse of the Day: Exodus 23:2
Devotional Message:
(Exodus 23:2)
"Do not follow the crowd, in doing wrong."
Observation: Standing Alone for What is Right
Have you ever watched the classic movie 12 Angry Men from 1957? It’s an old black-and-white film, but its message is still powerful today. In the movie, twelve men are chosen to decide if a young boy is guilty of a terrible crime. At first, eleven of the jurors quickly agree—guilty. They want to finish the trial fast, go home, and return to their lives. But one man—Juror Number 8—doesn’t rush to judgment. He stands alone. He has doubts. He isn’t sure if the boy is guilty, and he believes they should talk about it more before making a final decision.
At first, the other jurors get angry. They pressure him. They insult him. They call him names. They want him to follow the crowd, to agree with them, and to stop making things difficult. But Juror Number 8 holds his ground. He calmly asks questions. He looks closely at the evidence. And slowly, his courage helps others to think more carefully. In the end, the other jurors realize the boy might not be guilty after all. Because of this one man’s bravery, justice is served.
Now, this story reminds me of what God tells us in Exodus 23:2: “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.” It is easy to follow others, especially when we are afraid of standing out. Sometimes, the people around us are doing things that we know are wrong—cheating, lying, gossiping, or being unfair. And when we are alone in thinking differently, we can feel pressure to just go along with everyone else.
We might think:
"Everyone is doing it. Why should I be different?"
"If I speak up, they will laugh at me or get mad."
"I don’t want to cause problems."
But God is calling us to be like Juror Number 8—to stand up for what is right, even when it’s hard. Sometimes doing the right thing means standing alone, at least for a little while. But our faith reminds us that we are never truly alone. God is always with us.
Application: Standing Up in Our Daily Lives
Let’s bring this lesson into our everyday lives.
1. In School or Work:
Imagine you are in class, and everyone is copying answers during a test. You know it’s wrong, but you see your friends doing it. What will you do? Will you follow the crowd, or will you choose honesty, even if you are the only one?
2. With Friends:
Maybe your friends are making fun of someone behind their back. Everyone is laughing, and you feel the pressure to join in. Will you stay silent, or will you say, “Hey, that’s not right. Let’s not talk about others that way”?
3. In the Family:
Sometimes, family members argue or hold grudges. Maybe you see unfairness or anger growing. Will you help bring peace? Will you be the one to say, “Let’s talk calmly and forgive each other”?
4. Online and Social Media:
People often post harsh words and spread lies online. It’s easy to join in, to comment, or to share negative things. Will you be different? Will you choose to post kindness, truth, and encouragement?
Standing for what is right can be lonely. People may not always understand. They might tease you or ignore you. But remember this—doing what is right is always worth it. God sees your heart. He honors your courage. Sometimes, like Juror Number 8, your choice to stand alone will inspire others to do what is right too.
Encouragement: You Are Not Alone
When we stand for truth and goodness, we are never truly alone. Jesus stood alone many times. People misunderstood Him. They rejected Him. But He stayed faithful. And because of His love and sacrifice, we now have the gift of salvation.
So, when you feel like you are the only one standing for what is right, remember—you are standing with Jesus. You are standing with truth. And God will give you the strength you need.
Prayer:
Lord, give us the courage to stand for what is right, even when we stand alone. Help us not to follow the crowd in doing wrong. Strengthen our hearts when we feel afraid or pressured. Remind us that You are always with us. May our choices bring justice, peace, and love to those around us. Amen.
