Getting a bonsai can be easy but that can also be trap. The trap is that the best choices may in fact be an invasive species. The reason they are an invasive species and the best choice has a great deal of overlap.

The problem is that these species can become invasive. Invasive is a broad term for trees, shrubs and vines that can caus great harm to other trees, the environment and animals.

The exact process of this is effect is well described. An invasive species has 7 steps.

IVa Widespread but rare

V Widespread and dominant

This is important as the bonsai you buy, collect, or otherwise obtain cam be an invasive species. By itself this isn’t great but it can get worse. The way it gets worse is that some invasive species can be illegal or at least result in civil action.

The idea of your hobby becoming a huge liability isn’t a new idea with bonsai. A bonsai can and often do die or experience ea degree of death unexpectedly. It is just not going to involve the police, ranger or environmental officer knocking on your door.

Of course that is the extreme outcome. The more probable outcome is that you get an invasive species into your garden, yard or bonsai collection.
