We're a few weeks into the seed saga. While some of the starts have really taken off, some are struggling a little bit. Since they did get some direct sun exposure during some warmer days in late September and early October, some of the starts aren't looking too great.

We also lost some to cabbage loopers. You've probably seen the white moths fluttering around in your garden, and their little green caterpillars are big-time eaters. They especially love herbs, greens, and cruciferous plants such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. Know your threshold for how much plant damage you're okay with and how much you want to treat your plants. We're completely organic, and we even limit how much we use organic methods such as BT.

But that's why we overplant! It's always good to assume you are going to lose some seed starts and even some more mature plants to pests, disease, or just poor caretaking. That's just part of the natural gardening process.

Speaking of poor caretaking, we did miss on thinning out all of the starts. Instead of one strong plant - or maybe even two if you can split them up - we're ending up with one weak one at best. If you happen to miss thinning some plants, do it when you catch it! You want to give one of the plants the best chance you can to grow well even despite a competitive start.

When it comes time to transplant, be aware of the time of day, soil moisture, and weather. We stuck to our schedule and transplanted despite a warm week. To combat the heat, we used a row cover and shade cloth, but we did still see some losses. Keep an eye out for leaves that have burned and remove them.
