In a bold statement during his Middle East tour, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to end iPhone manufacturing in India and shift production back to the United States. Speaking in Doha, Trump claimed Apple would be “upping their production in the U.S.” — a push aligned with his second-term “America First” manufacturing policy.
Currently, Apple doesn’t manufacture any iPhones in the U.S. China remains the largest hub, with India producing around 40 million units annually — nearly 15% of Apple’s global output. Interestingly, CEO Tim Cook recently confirmed that, due to growing trade tensions with China, a majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. would be made in India by the June quarter.
India swiftly responded to Trump’s comments, calling them “premature” without naming him directly. This development follows March’s last-minute $2 billion iPhone shipment from India to the U.S. by Foxconn and Tata, just ahead of Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs.
