On 2 September 2020, United Nations University hosted “Japan’s Role in an Evolving Asia“, a virtual conversation with Prof. Jeff Kingston, Professor and Director, Asian Studies, Temple University Japan.

The story of Japan’s postwar rebuilding experience, economic expansion, and resilience through crises (the Korean and Cold Wars, economic shocks, and the current pandemic) is often lauded in analyses of an advancing Asia. Japan’s relative stability, economic potency and considerable diplomatic power have led many to predict an even greater role for the country in an increasingly (eastward) shifting international order. The COVID-19 pandemic has, however, forced re-evaluations in all areas.

What will Japan’s role be in a post-pandemic world? Where is its place in the face of China’s rise, the increasingly fraught relationship between Washington and Beijing, and the flight of capital from Hong Kong? What role, if any, can it play in revitalising rapid growth in South and Southeast Asia? Can it overcome the historical grievances that bedevil relations with the Republic of Korea, and what of its much touted values-oriented diplomacy?

Prof. Kingston joined UNU Rector David M. Malone and discussed what role Japan might assume in the post-pandemic era and the future of a changing Asia.
