#ArchivesRoadToRevolution is a rotating exhibition series highlighting National Archives records that document major milestones around the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

More than a year before independence was declared, war broke out between the British Army and New England militia at the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

Learn more as curator Corinne Porter highlights the American perception of the battle through the deposition of militia Captain John Parker, who ordered his men to "disperse and not to fire" when a shot rang out from an unknown person. While we will likely never know who fired the “shot heard 'round the world,” the events of this defining moment spurred Continental action and have stirred the national imagination ever since.

You can view Captain Parker's deposition and more records about this historic battle on display at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, through the end of April: visit.archives.gov/whats-on/explore-exhibits/battles-lexington-and-concord
