Boxing is one of the most popular sports in the world. Boxing has a history dating back to BC and was originally a very dangerous martial art. In this article, we'll take a look at the history of boxing and how it became a sport that was once illegal.
There are many theories about the origins of boxing. There are accounts of boxing being adopted as a military sport in Egypt around 4000 BC, a vase depicting boxing found in the ruins of an Aegean civilisation around 3000 BC, and a boxing fight depicted in Homer's Iliad around 1100 BC. It was not until the ancient Olympic Games in the 600s BC that it was actually adopted as a sport.
However, it was banned by the Roman emperors because it was too dangerous at the time, causing casualties, and because it was a brutal game in which slaves fought each other until one of them died for the entertainment of the people.
Boxing was revived in England in the early 16th century with prize money. The founder of modern boxing was James Figg. He established gyms and created an environment for the development of boxers.
Figg's protégé, Jack Broughton, the third champion, feared the dangers of boxing as he fought himself, and in 1743 he published the Broughton Code. It banned biting and throwing, and for the first time set out in writing the rules for judging, scoring and prize money in a sport that until then had been pretty much open and shut.
However, the Broughton Code did not catch on, and actual fights continued to have no rules. Finally, in 1754, the game was made illegal in England. In 1867, the Queensberry Rules, which set out the basic rules of boxing as we know it today, were adopted and laid the foundations for boxing as a sport, with rounds, gloves, no throwing and a KO rule. In 1921, the world's first boxing match was broadcast on the radio.
It is said that the first Japanese to witness boxing was Commodore Perry when he arrived in Japan. Sailors were frequently seen on the ship, wrapping thin leather cloth around their fists and punching each other. There are records of a number of dojos being set up to teach boxing, but they seem to have been largely ineffective due to a lack of students.
Boxing began in earnest in Japan in 1921, when Yujiro Watanabe, who had come to the United States at the age of 19 and trained in San Francisco, became a professional boxer for 14 years and founded the Nippon Kento Club, the first real boxing gym in Japan.
Originally, boxing was enjoyed as a martial art where deaths were natural, but nowadays the rules are applied so that the fighters can fight as safely as possible. This has made boxing more popular not only as a spectator sport but also as a "fighter" sport.
