In a major blow to India's Maoist movement, CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao, also known as Basavaraju, was killed in a high-intensity operation in Chhattisgarh’s Abujhmad region on May 21, 2025.
The operation lasted over 50 hours and resulted in the deaths of 27 Maoists, including one of India’s most wanted insurgents.
Basavaraju was considered the mastermind behind deadly attacks such as the 2010 Dantewada and 2013 Jiram Ghati massacres.
His death leaves the Maoist leadership fractured and facing an uncertain future.
