Tens of thousands of homes could be built on previously protected green belt land under radical plans to be announced on Friday by the mayor of London.

Describing protections on the green belt as “wrong, out of date and simply unsustainable,” Sadiq Khan said that “development on carefully chosen parts of the green belt, done in the right way, would allow us to unlock hundreds of thousands of good quality new homes for Londoners.”

The announcement amounted to a substantial reversal on previous pledges to “preserve and enhance” the green belt around the capital.

Khan’s announcement comes alongside a target of building 88,000 homes a year across the capital, substantially more than the current target of 52,000, all of which are intended to be delivered on previously developed, or brownfield, land.
