Asad stood on the corner of a crowded street, drenched to the bone in the pouring rain. The water cascaded off his shoulders, soaking the small red box he clutched tightly in his hands. Around him, the city of Karachi moved on, seemingly indifferent to the downpour. Cars splashed through puddles, and street vendors hurried to cover their wares, but Asad remained still, rooted to the spot.
The rain was relentless, like the ache in his chest.
He had waited for what felt like an eternity, as the rain continued to fall, drumming on the rooftops and splashing into the overflowing gutters. The small red box in his hand grew heavier with every passing moment, its weight a reminder of the dream he had nurtured with so much hope. Inside was a simple ring, purchased after months of saving. It wasn’t much, but to him, it was a symbol of everything he wanted to offer her—love, commitment, a promise of forever.
He closed his eyes for a moment, letting the rain wash over his face, as memories of their time together flooded his mind. He could see her laughter as they sipped chai under a makeshift roadside canopy during a rainstorm just like this. He could hear her voice, bold and full of life, promising him, "I’ll fight the world for us." But tonight, she wasn’t here. The promise felt as distant as the clouds that had brought this rain.
Minutes turned into hours, and the crowd around him began to thin. The city lights flickered as the rain intensified, turning the streets into rivers. Yet, Asad didn’t move. The box in his hand was now damp, the red wrapping paper peeling away to reveal the plain cardboard beneath. The realization hit him like a cold gust of wind—Sana wasn’t coming.
With trembling hands, he opened the box and looked at the ring inside. The tiny piece of jewelry sparkled faintly under the streetlight, a cruel reminder of what could have been. Tears mingled with the raindrops on his face as he stared at the empty street, the last traces of hope slipping away.
Asad took a deep breath, his chest heavy with grief, and closed the box gently. He slid it into his pocket, wiped his face with his rain-soaked sleeve, and stood up straight. The rain continued to pour, relentless and unyielding, but it no longer mattered. He took his first step away from the corner, then another, until he disappeared into the storm, vowing to leave this broken chapter of his life behind.
