Michigan football grades vs Alabama: Defensive masterclass in ReliaQuest Bowl

This is graded on a curve given U-M was operating with an interim offensive coordinator (tight ends coach Steve Casula) and didn't have its top two rushers (Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards), top two pass catchers (Colston Loveland and Tyler Morris) or its starting left tackle (Myles Hinton).

Even still, this was a tough performance. The defense set up the attack inside Alabama's territory four times in the first quarter and U-M managed just one touchdown. Three times Michigan started inside the 20 and instead of pulling away, it was still just 16-0 after the Tide had given away its first four possessions.

The running game struggled quite a bit. U-M had just one carry go for more than 13 yards and finished with 51 rushes for 115 yards (2.3 per carry) on the afternoon. The passing game was no better. Davis Warren completed 9 of 12 passes for 73 yards and one score before he left the game with injury in the third quarter and the pass game really halted when Alex Orji came in: he completed 2 of 3 passes for 2 yards and one interception.

Outside of Fred Moore, who caught three passes for 37 yards, nobody had more than 10 yards through the air.
