About a year and a half ago, I made a video titled “MultiVersus: What Went Wrong?” where I detailed the history of the MultiVersus open beta, and what eventually led to them taking the game offline before its final release. In the 18 months since that video, the WB Games Smash Bros competitor was re-released, received 5 seasons worth of content updates, and then got shut down again. As the game prepares for its official closure date at the end of May 2025, I would like to reflect on how we got here. This is the story of MultiVersus. And this is the story of how NOT to save a game.
